Volcanoes National Park is the oldest national park in Africa. Volcanoes National Park is the smallest park in Rwanda with just 160km2 but housing five volcanoes making it a top tour destination for tourists. Volcanoes National Park is the only park with mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park

The Park is situated in northwestern Rwanda and is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

This park offers chances for tourists to catch a rare glimpse of the gorillas.
Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is also able to offer some of the country’s most spectacular scenery and diverse vegetation. It is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and covers more than 125 sq km including five extinct volcanoes; Muhabura, Sabinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Bisoke. The latter two can be climbed during one or two-day treks.

Against this backdrop, tourists can hike through the lush bamboo and hygenia rainforest, open grassland and swamp of the Volcanoes National Park to discover golden monkeys, bush duiker, buffalo and spotted hyenas among others.

Volcanoes national park became famous as the research base of the late American primatologist Dian Fossey. The park continues to uphold its reputation as a destination for unrivaled wildlife encounters and at the edges of Mt. Sabinyo is also where you find Fossey’s tomb where she was buried alongside the gorillas she loved so dearly.
